Outpatient Opioid Addiction Treatment with Co-Occurring Mental Health Care

Compassionate, hospital-based outpatient treatment for opioid use disorder and the mental health conditions underneath it. FDA-approved Suboxone and Vivitrol MAT, integrated therapy, and care that meets you where you are — in Port Charlotte, Arcadia, and throughout Southwest Florida.

Opioid Addiction & Co-Occurring Mental Health

When someone lives with both opioid use disorder (OUD) and a mental health condition, it is called a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis. For many, opioids become a way to self-medicate untreated depression, anxiety, or trauma. For others, opioid use triggers or worsens psychiatric symptoms over time. True recovery addresses both: the physical dependence, and the emotional pain underneath.

Our outpatient approach treats them together — so your treatment plan is one plan, not two.

Signs & Symptoms of Opioid Addiction

  • Taking more than the prescribed dosage or running out early
  • Strong cravings or compulsive use
  • Withdrawal symptoms — body aches, nausea, anxiety, insomnia
  • Isolating from loved ones or losing interest in daily life
  • Doctor-shopping or using illicit substances like heroin or fentanyl
  • Mood instability, depression, or sleep disturbances

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Past trauma or untreated PTSD
  • Chronic pain and extended use of prescribed opioids
  • Co-occurring depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder
  • Family history of addiction
  • Lack of emotional support or healthy coping tools
  • Exposure to fentanyl-contaminated supply in illicit use

What the Dual Diagnosis Picture Looks Like

  • Roughly 60% of people with OUD also live with a mental health disorder
  • Depression and anxiety are the most common co-occurring conditions
  • PTSD rates among people with OUD are significantly higher than in the general population
  • Integrated treatment improves outcomes compared with treating either condition alone

Consequences of Untreated Opioid Addiction

Opioid misuse can devastate lives. The risks are severe — but recovery is real, especially when care treats the whole person, not just the drug use.

How We Treat Opioid Addiction and Mental Health Together

At DeSoto Memorial Hospital Behavioral Health, our outpatient approach is rooted in understanding, structure, and trust. We don’t treat addiction in isolation — we address the mental and emotional patterns that keep it in place.

  • Psychiatric Evaluation: In-depth assessment of substance use, trauma, and emotional health — so your plan starts with the full picture.
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT): FDA-approved Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) and Vivitrol (naltrexone) to reduce cravings, prevent relapse, and block the effects of opioids. Office-based — no separate clinic visits required.
  • Individual & Group Therapy: Evidence-based CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed care. Process trauma, build coping tools, and learn from others in recovery.
  • Medical Coordination: As a hospital-affiliated program, we can coordinate medical oversight and referrals across the DeSoto Memorial Hospital system when care needs extend beyond behavioral health.
  • Family Counseling: Heal relationships and build supportive systems at home — because recovery happens in relationships.

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers deeper structure for those needing more frequent care while still maintaining work and home responsibilities. Many people begin at IOP and step down to standard outpatient as they stabilize.

Evidence-based

The Opioid Crisis in Plain Numbers

The data is sobering — and it’s also why integrated, evidence-based care matters so much. These figures come from the federal agencies closest to the problem.

~2.5M

US adults living with opioid use disorder

Most of them have never received evidence-based treatment — despite the availability of FDA-approved medications that dramatically reduce overdose risk.

Source: SAMHSA 2023 NSDUH

~50%

Lower overdose risk with medications for OUD

Buprenorphine and naltrexone — the two classes of medication we use — cut the risk of overdose death by roughly half when combined with therapy.

Source: NIDA: Medications to Treat OUD

~60%

Of people with OUD also live with a mental health disorder

Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder top the list. Treating the opioid use alone misses half the picture — and often leads to relapse.
