What's Love Got To Do With It?

Valentine's Day often centers on romantic relationships—partnerships, connection, and being chosen by someone else. While these relationships can be meaningful and important, they are not the foundation of our emotional well-being.

That foundation begins with the relationship we have with ourselves.

From a mental health perspective, the self-relationship shapes how we cope, connect, and navigate stress, loss, and change. The way we speak to ourselves during difficult moments, respond to our emotions, and honor our needs directly impacts our overall mental and emotional health.

A healthy relationship with the self includes:

  • Self-awareness rather than self-judgment

  • Compassion in moments of struggle

  • Boundaries that protect emotional and psychological safety

  • Permission to rest, feel, and heal

When self-connection is limited or critical, even supportive relationships can feel overwhelming or insufficient. However, when self-compassion is present, relationships often become more balanced, secure, and authentic.

This season is an opportunity to reflect on how we care for ourselves emotionally:

  • Do we allow ourselves kindness when we make mistakes?

  • Do we listen to our needs, or push them aside?

  • Do we offer ourselves the same understanding we give to others?

Self-love is not a destination—it's a practice built through small, consistent acts of care and self-respect. Your mental health is deeply connected to how you relate to yourself; nurturing that relationship is essential.
