Suicide Prevention Month: Recognizing the Signs, Starting the Conversation, and Reaching Out for Support
Recognizing the Signs
Many people who are experiencing suicidal thoughts do not openly say they are struggling. Sometimes the signs show up through changes in behavior, mood, or connection.
Possible warning signs may include:
Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they once enjoyed
Expressing feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, or feeling like a burden
Talking about wanting to disappear, not wanting to be here, or feeling there is no way forward
Increased substance use or risky behaviors
Significant changes in sleep, appetite, energy, or daily functioning
Giving away belongings or making unexpected "goodbyes"
Increased agitation, anxiety, anger, or emotional pain
A sudden sense of calm after a period of intense distress
It's important to remember: a person does not have to "look suicidal" to be struggling. Checking in can make a meaningful difference.
You Don't Have to Be in Crisis to Call
In moments of emotional crisis, many people hesitate to reach out because they do not believe their situation is "serious enough" or they worry they are burdening someone.
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential support 24/7 for anyone experiencing emotional distress, a mental health crisis, or thoughts of suicide.
You do not have to be actively suicidal to reach out. You can call, text, or chat with 988 if you are:
Feeling overwhelmed and unsure how to cope
Experiencing intense emotional distress
Worried about someone you love
Unsure what steps to take next
Difficult Conversations Are Often the Most Important
Many people avoid asking about suicide because the conversation feels uncomfortable, or because they worry that asking someone if they are struggling will create suicidal thoughts. Instead, it creates an opportunity for honesty, connection, and support.
Try starting with:
"I've noticed you haven't seemed like yourself lately. How are you really doing?"
"You matter to me, and I wanted to check in."
"You don't have to go through this alone."
"Have you been having thoughts about hurting yourself or not wanting to be here?"
If someone says yes, the goal is not to immediately fix everything. The goal is to listen, stay present, and help them connect with support. A conversation can be the first step toward hope.
New Beginnings on the Horizon
Beginning October 1, 2026, DeSoto Memorial Hospital's Behavioral Health Department will be recognized as TGH DeSoto Outpatient Behavioral Health – Port Charlotte and Arcadia as we proudly begin this new era with Tampa General Hospital.
While our name and branding will change, the exceptional team you know and trust will remain the same, along with the high-quality behavioral health services we provide to adults and older adults experiencing mental health challenges. You will notice that the Twin Rivers logos will no longer be part of our branding, but our commitment to our patients, partners, and community remains unchanged.
Our business contacts will remain steady and intact, allowing us to continue the relationships and collaborations that have made our work in the community so meaningful.
We are excited to embrace this new beginning and look forward to what lies ahead. We hope to see you at our upcoming Lunch & Learn events, where we will continue working together to strengthen connections, expand knowledge, and build a healthier, stronger community.
