High Temperatures & Mental Health

During summer, elevated temperatures can exacerbate the effects of psychotropic drugs on mental health. Heat increases the risk of dehydration and heat stroke, complicating the management of conditions like depression and anxiety. Medications such as antipsychotics and antidepressants may impair the body’s ability to regulate temperature, heightening vulnerability to heat-related illnesses. It’s crucial for individuals on these medications to stay hydrated, avoid excessive heat exposure, and consult healthcare providers to ensure their mental and physical well-being during hot weather.

6 Ways to Stay Cool in Extreme Heat

  • Drink Water
  • Find Air Conditioning
  • Insulate Your Home
  • Wear Sunscreen
  • Never Leave people or pets
  • in a closed car
  • Avoid Strenuous Activity

Meet Our Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern, TRP

This is Tanya Vazquez originally from Brooklyn, NY. After 20yrs with the NYC Department of Correction, she retired and relocated to southwest Florida. Tanya became a Florida Guardian ad Litem and was a court appointed advocate for children in the system. This eventually led her to work in Charlotte County Public Schools as a substitute teacher. It was her work as a substitute teacher that aided in her decision to return to school. “I saw a need that was not being met. I saw families and a community that was suffering with mental illness.” While completing her master’s in clinical mental health counseling, Tanya was hired as an intern at Twin Rivers Pathways where she learned the ins and outs of mental health counseling. She has completed her studies and is waiting on full licensure from the state. While waiting, Tanya continues her work at TRP providing group therapy to the community. Tanya says, “I think this is where I was supposed to be all along and I’m never leaving!”
